Did You Know?

Archery is the art, practice, or skill of propelling arrows with the use of a bow, from Latin arcus.

A person who participates in archery is typically known as an "archer" or "bowman", and one who is fond of or an expert at archery can be referred to as a "toxophilite".

A maker of arrows is called a "fletcher" and a maker of bows a "bowyer". Today "Archer" and "Fletcher" are still common english surnames. Largely due to the success of the English Longbow as a hunting and war weapon in the Middle Ages.

Archery is a sport steeped in myth and fantasy but has it's feet in reality. We all know about William Tell and Robin Hood. But did you know that 2500 English Archers defeated 20 000 French Knights at the Battle of Agincourt?

Archery has been with us since the dawn of time. Throughout history man has used archery and it's predecessor the atlatl or spear thrower to project arrows or dartsin order to hunt or make war. Today people practice the art of archery for health and recreation.

Archery develops the ability to focus as well as to provide healthy excercise. Walking regularly up and down the range and the physical effort involved in drawing the bow provides plenty of non-impact cardio workout. What is more, getting into the fresh air and spending the afternoon on a lovely wine estate is not to be sneezed at!

Archery is one of the few sports were the elderly, the young and the paraplegics can compete on an equal footing. This is truly one of the few equal opportunity sports out there. Madame Skorupska, a polish immigrant to South Africa recognized this and established a yearly tournament to encourage this competition. Today we still hold the Madame Skorupska Tournament.
